"Mrs. Sirman, your husband's cremation is experiencing a problem," a voice said.

"What kind of problem?" Mrs. Sirman asked.

"It's his body. It won't burn," the voice replied.

And so begins Pam Sirman's journey. The first step in realizing that everything she thought she knew about her husband may be wrong, including his very humanity. If he's not human, then what is he?

Pam is just one of three individuals whose lives will become intertwined by the apocalypse known as the Upwelling. The other two are Chan and Danni, and their worlds are already in disarray. Several weeks ago, a violent storm, accompanied by an upwelling from the Atlantic abyssal plain, ravaged Atlantic City. When it subsided, the city and its 25,000 inhabitants had vanished without a trace. Chan and Danni recall being in the city that day, but the ten hours during which the Upwelling occurred have been wiped from their memories.

They are determined to retrieve those lost memories. Or are they? Could they have witnessed something so horrific that their minds can't bear to remember it? Or even worse, could they have been the ones responsible for the Upwelling?

As the three individuals grapple with their own questions and uncertainties, they are on a collision course with the truth about the Upwelling, and the unsettling reality of their own roles in it.
